Maclean’s Music Colt posts steady July FT sales

Browning said the sale met his highest expectations at the start of the North American yearling sales season.

“Saturday mornings are very busy. We came in on Sunday morning, I had to park one row further away than usual. It was really refreshing,” Browning said.

“I felt very happy selling from 8am on Saturday to almost 5am on Tuesday. And a lot of people smiled,” he added.

Although primarily sold to anglers, he said there are a number of active end users on the course, including top instructors Kenny McPeek, Steve Asmussen and Wesley Ward.

“We spent 10 years trying to change the name of this sale from a foal sale to a yearling sale,” he said.

Brian Graves, general manager of Gainesway Farm, echoed Browning’s optimism.

“When we saw him (Hip 170) at the farm, we thought he was that kind of young horse,” Graves said of Hip 170’s $500,000 price tag. “There were always a few nervous moments, but in the end, yeah, we expected something like that.

“We were looking at the horses in our consignment and I turned to Lakota, our assistant, and I said this is the best horse we’ve had so far. It’s perfect. I mean it looks like it’s in a 2-year-old auction, it’s going to be :09 4/5. It’s a big horse, it looks like it can keep its pace,” he added.

The sale heads north to New York for Fasig-Tipton’s premier yearling auction of the summer, The Saratoga Sale, which takes place August 5-6 in Saratoga Springs.

“I can’t wait to get to Saratoga. I can’t wait for Monday night and Tuesday,” Browning said. “We have a great lineup.”
