Victoria is rolling out digital licenses across the state, but they’re not for everyone yet

All Victorian full license holders can now download their digital driver’s license, but learner and provisional permit holders will have to wait a little longer.

After starting a trial with Ballarat residents last July, the Victorian Government announced in April it will issue digital licenses to all 4.5 million eligible drivers in May. These are available now.

As previously confirmed, L and P recorders will have to wait until 2025 to get their hands on a digital license, that is, if they don’t qualify for an open license sooner.

Drivers in New South Wales have been able to access their digital license since mid-2021, while Queensland began making it available statewide in November 2023.

If you are an eligible Victorian resident, you will automatically receive your permit through the VicRoads app or Services Victoria once it is processed and notified via push notification or email.

Digital licenses can be updated in real time if there are changes in licensing conditions or personal information such as home address.

The Victorian Government also said it had conducted rigorous security and privacy checks, with digital licenses featuring animated holograms – just like physical licenses – plus timed QR codes that businesses and authorities can scan to verify authenticity and prevent fraudulent use.

Before the Ballarat trial began last year, the Victorian Government said it planned to roll out digital licenses statewide by 2024.

It plans to use the trial to gather feedback from motorists, police, licensed venues and other businesses. More than 15,000 Victorians took part.

The trial was not without flaws, VicRoads was issued an apology in June after sending 57,000 emails with incorrect customer last names.

It said no other customer data had been released.
