Sports brand Cupra considers a… sports car

As a niche, sporty brand, that’s perhaps surprising Cupra has yet to offer a sports car.

That could change, with CEO Wayne Griffiths leaving the door open to creating such a model for the Volkswagen Group’s young brand.

“If we have to create new models on the scale that we have, those new models have to allow us to access truly global markets, like the US, or do something very, very specifically for our brand,” said Mr. Griffiths.

“And so if we were to make different cars, it would be cars that fit our brand and our brand DNA. And so we’re talking about if there are more cars or new models, I’ll bet on a sports car, for example.

“Sorry, I can’t, but at some point in the future there may be a chance to own a nice sports car from Cupra.”

If passed, this would make the Cupra one of the Volkswagen Group’s few stable sports cars. The Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda brands, for example, have no products, while Audi is discontinuing production of its products. TT.

It will also give the sports brand a halo pattern.

With Cupra having confirmed its last new internal combustion engine vehicle launch will be the Terramar in 2024 and has committed to going electric by 2030, any sports car the company makes eyes will almost certainly be electric cars.

If Cupra launches a sports car, it will also likely be priced lower than the upcoming electric Porsche 718 successor in the Volkswagen Group, with Mr Griffiths making it clear that Cupra is not a high-end brand. class or luxury.

“We have many brands within the Volkswagen Group that produce luxury and premium cars. Mr. Griffiths said.

“And I mean, that’s putting us in a real trap and overlapping with other brands that we don’t need.”

Cupra has been busy expanding its product line since it was spun off from the SEAT brand in 2018. Born electric expansion participates in combustion Ateca, Formentor And Leonwhile the next few years will bring electricity tavascan and gasoline and plug-in hybrid terroir cross.

The brand will also present a production version of the UrbanRebel idea.

It has also been shown that there is room on Volkswagen TiguanThe small Terramar for a larger SUV should it launch in the US market, for which it has conducted market research.

Cupra sold a record 152,900 vehicles globally in 2022, with 1111 of those sold in Australia. It targets 500,000 annual sales globally by 2025And 7000 sales in Australia in the same year.

It took Skoda more than a decade to sell 7,000 cars in a year Down Under, but the ambitious Cupra brand wants to do it in three years.
