New DJI Mini 3 cuts costs, avoids collisions

DJI has announced the details of their new, entry-level product 3 camera mini drone. The standout number isn’t the camera specs or the design, but the price: $409 (drone only, shipping in January).

This costs significantly less than the Mini 3 Pro announced earlier this year. That price difference comes with some sacrifices. Most notable – especially for newbies – is the lack of comprehensive obstacle avoidance. So, you know, fly at your own risk.

Mini 3 is equipped with a 12 MP 1/1.3 inch CMOS sensor compared to the 48 MP sensor of the Pro. At the same time, the video specs are a bit lower with “only” 4K/30fps. That said, the price is hard to beat and increases flight time and adds “True Vertical Shooting” over the existing DJI Mini 2.

Notably, new DJI Mini 3″ Drone weighs in at “under 249 grams.” Why such a specific number without further clarification on the size? DJI is pursuing a mass market of drone enthusiasts who don’t want the hassle of registering devices weighing more than 250 grams with federal agencies—such as the FAA in the US .

Just in time for the holidays, the Mini 3 can be a fun stuffing (or pocket) item.
