Durand Cup: All ready for an exciting start to the football season
Next Tuesday, the schedule of Indian football will officially start with the historic Durand Cup. All of the country’s top teams will be in battle mode ahead of a grueling season.
Asia’s 131st and third oldest football tournament in the world becomes extremely important as it is now recognized in the list of tournaments of the Asian Football Confederation. This means that all 11 teams in the Indian Super League and the top five I-League teams (except Gokulam Kerala FC) participate.
With most parties busy with transfer work over the past few months, fans will be eager to see how their teams have shaped for the battles ahead.
Joining the top clubs will be four Service skins, bringing the total to 20 teams this time. Teams will be divided into four groups of five each in the initial group stage, which will be held in three cities – Kolkata (hosting two groups), Guwahati and Imphal.
The first match of the tournament will see defending champion FC Goa against local giants Mohammedan Sporting SC for a repeat of last year’s final, at Salt Stadium. The tournament will be opened by the Chief Minister of Bengal Mamata Banerjee, and the organizers – a combination of three services led by the Indian Army and the Government of West Bengal – hope that President Droupadi Murmu will agree. with the required attendance of the final (scheduled for September 18).

FC Goa, Mohammedan Sporting, Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur FC and the Indian Air Force make up Group A, the group of real heavyweights, and will be based in Kolkata. With only the top two teams going on to the knockout stage (quarter-finals) from the group, the competition is expected to be quite fierce in this group.
Group B is also based in Kolkata. This group will be a popular choice because of the presence of traditional rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, who have been placed in the same club to heighten the excitement.
The remaining three teams are former ISL champions Mumbai City FC, I-League team Rajasthan United FC and Indian Navy. Salt Lake Stadium and the newly renovated Kishore Bharati Stadium will be the two locations in Kolkata.
Group C will be located at Imphal (Khuman Lampak Stadium) and will feature the defending ISL champions – Hyderabad FC and Chennaiyin FC – attracting attention. Two local teams NEROCA FC and TRAU FC are expected to play well next to the red shirt army, the team ranked fifth.
Guwahati will host Group D (Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium), where the challenge will be led by three-time ISL runner-up Kerala Blasters. Kerala’s side will face a challenge from the likes of Odisha FC and local favorites NorthEast United FC, which launched the squad at the start of the season. I-League team Sudeva Delhi FC and Army Green are the two remaining teams in the group.
