Ranked stake winner Mustanfar dies aged 21
Graded multi-stake winner Mustanfar was euthanized June 27 at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky. He is 21 years old.
A full autopsy is currently pending.
Raised and owned by Shadwell Farms, Mustanfar, along with five other retired stallions, was recently moved to Old Friends Retirement in Georgetown, Ky. Maktoum in 2021.
Old Friends Chairman Michael Blowen announced that Mustanfar will pass away on Monday.
As the son of the Unbridled out of the Lyphard mare Manwah, Mustanfar has certainly lived up to his prestigious pedigree on the track. He raced between the ages of two and six, made 27 career starts, and won or earned a spot in nine graded stakes competitions on both land and grass.
Owned by Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell and run by coach Kieran McLaughlin, Mustanfar captured the Lexington Stakes (G3T) at Belmont Park and Sycamore Breeders ‘Cup Turf (G3T) at Keeneland.
Mustanfar retired in 2007 with an income of $625,010. He has stood at both Shadwell’s Indiana Stallion and Nashwan Stud Terminals.
Blowen said: “He was the youngest of the Shadwell stallions and he became an instant favorite. “We regret that many of his fans have not been able to appreciate him for much longer.”
