Romain Grosjean’s kids convinced him to race on IndyCar ovals
When Romain Grosjean leaves Formula 1 in 2020 (after escaped a horrible crash in Bahrain) and in my own way arrive IndyCarhe did so with a plan: He would compete on the streets and circuitsbut oval is a must not go for European drivers. Then, in the 2022 season, one thing changed his mind: His kids.
“They asked me why I’m not in the race going on in 2021,” Grosjean told Jalopnik in an interview. “I said, ‘Well, there’s more risk, and I don’t want you to stand in front of the TV and see bad things.’
But Grosjean’s children – Sacha, Simon and Camille – keep asking why their father doesn’t compete on those oval tracks. He talked to his wife, Marion, about it. She was on board with him trying out the oval.
“So I said, ‘Okay, let’s get started. Let’s have a big team and try to win the championship,” said Grosjean.
The Driver Andretti Autosport only two rugby balls so far, and his performance left something to be desired. But the end result doesn’t tell the whole story. Finished in 26th place at Texas Motor Speedway due to a faulty engine, and he crashed in 2022 Indy 500. In both races, Grosjean demonstrated the speed and skill of navigating the unique requirements of oval racing, finishing 13th in Texas and 9th in Indy.
G/O Media may receive a commission
Now, however, Grosjean admits he’s really looking forward to the upcoming oval races at Iowa and the Gateway.
He told Jalopnik that the rugby race “is more complicated than it seems. Races are often very long, and I need to learn when to be patient, when to take chances. It’s much more complicated than the picture on TV where you just turn left and go flat! ”
