What is the biggest victory of Joe Calzaghe’s career? Barry Jones decided
Joe Calzaghe’s career is often defined by a number of fights in England and America.
His first world championship win over Chris Eubank, the 12-round education he passed on to Jeff Lacy, that big night at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium against Mikkel Kessler and 24 combined innings which he shared with fighting game legends Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins.
The impressive and dazzling display against Lacy is still remembered to this day but his Welsh Boxing colleague remains superb and is now highly rated respected expert Barry Jones chose Calzaghe’s battle with the Great Dane.
“Winning Kessler was his best win,” Jones told Declan Taylor in episode 49 of Boxing Social Podcast.
“I know people say Kessler isn’t fit for the fight and maybe but tell me one boxer had the perfect camp and I’ll show you a liar. It’s the best Kessler you’ll ever see.
“I spoke to Joe after the fight and said I really feel sorry for Kessler because he put up a perfect fight to beat you and it just wasn’t enough. After three or four rounds, he [Calzaghe] get stuck and just change the whole pattern of the war. It was the biggest battle in the division at the time, for what that war meant, at that level, for every little mistake you pay for and can’t do anything wrong. It is very difficult to change the fighting pattern in any war. At that level, it takes a good fighter.”
