10 dead in a mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket
Payton Gendron, 18-year-old youth who is said to have shot and kill 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket on Saturday afternoon, fueled by hate, authorities said. He was charged with first-degree murder on Saturday, Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn said in a statement New information postedand pleaded not guilty.
Here’s what we know about the shooting suspect:
Investigators are reviewing a 180-page manifesto posted online related to the shooting investigation, two federal law enforcement sources told CNN Saturday.
The manifesto, which was independently obtained by CNN shortly after the attack and before authorities released the suspect’s name, is believed to have been written by someone claiming to be Payton Gendron about the attack.
The manifesto’s author says he’s been buying ammo for some time but isn’t serious about planning the attack until January. The author also continues on his perception of the dwindling white population size and claims of cultural and ethnic substitution by whites.
Part of the document is written in a question and answer format.
The author of the manifesto considers the Internet to be the bulk of his beliefs and describes himself as a fascist, a white supremacist, and an anti-Semitist.
Authorities said when the suspect arrived at the store around 2:30 p.m., he was heavily armed, wearing tactical gear, a helmet, and had a camera that was live-streaming his actions.
Flynn said the suspect used an assault weapon during the press conference.
Popular live-streaming platform Twitch on Saturday confirmed that the shooter used its platform to go live during the attack.
Gendron was charged Saturday night before Chief Justice of the City of Buffalo Craig Hannah on one count of first-degree murder, the county press release said.
He pleaded not guilty, Hannah told CNN. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole, the statement said.
Gendron is expected to return to court on the morning of May 19 for a felony hearing, the release said. He will remain in custody without bail, it added.
