Teaching tug of war to tackle reactivity – Part 1

FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY Watch Dunbar Academy’s brand new Canine-Dog Responsiveness webinar for FREEDr. Ian Dunbar explains how to address dog and dog reactions and why teaching your dog to play Tug of War is one of the most effective things you can do.

In this video, Kelly works with novice dogs and demonstrates how you can start teaching a dog to tug. She works with three dogs, starting with a little one year old Corgi, then a Poodle puppy, and finally Missy, our resident old lady.

  • Corgi had never played tug of war before, but she did play ball, so it was easy to get her started using the ball on the rope.
  • Next up is Poodle, who is also completely new to the game of Tug of War. She also loves to play, but instead uses a pull toy with fabric.
  • Finally Missy, our geriatric demo dog. Missy is a little older, completely deaf, and completely indifferent to Kelly’s every attempt to get her to play Tug of War. But Missy is a foodie. The food is very motivating. So Kelly found a way to harness that momentum in a way that could safely lead to playing Tug of War.
