9 states pass anti-transgender bill before legislative session

Kentucky, which begins a new legislative session this week, has a school restroom bill on the committee that would allow families to sue if their child encounters a transgender student while using the restroom. .

Other states are still drafting bills restricting sex-determined care for transgender youth, though they have yet to formally introduce legislation. Montana legislators are in the process of drafting many of these bills, and New Hampshire lawmakers are still working on one, currently named LSR0071.

Topping, as well as Corinne Green, policy strategist and legislator for the Equality League, do not want transgender people to panic over upcoming legislation for 2023 and the development of multiple bills targeting adults.

“We are still very early in the year,” said Topping. “Who knows what will happen to these bills as we move forward. One thing we do know is that when we showed up in the past, when we showed up in state capitals, which is what trans people and people who love us always do, we were able to defeat these bills.”
