652 heavy vehicle accidents in Q1 2024, 287 deaths – 'High-speed weighing in motion' system coming soon

In the first quarter of 2024, there were 652 Accidents involving heavy vehicles such as container trucks, small trucks and express buses. Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Hasbi Habibollah today told parliament that of this total, 287 people died and 95 were seriously injured.

MP Limbang said JPJ is constantly conducting research to solve the problem of heavy vehicle accidents. Among the measures taken are active enforcement of weight and speed limits for heavy vehicles and issuance of summonses. Last year, 45,015 saman issued for hazardous/overload situations, while in Q1 2024, 9,214 saman was punished for the same crime, Astro Awani report.

Hasbi also said that his Ministry together with the Ministry of Works is in the final process of implementing the ‘High Speed ​​- Weighing in Motion’ system. With HS-WIM, enforcement of heavy vehicles can take place in real-time, automatically, without the vehicle stopping for weighing. He added that the HS-WIM system will also reduce manpower requirements.
