You cannot choose your cabin location

Upgrading is basically like ordering a guaranteed cabin – a room type where your cabin type is guaranteed, but your particular room location is not. You agree to let the cruise line choose your cabin in exchange for a discount on that room. You give up control of where your cabin is located on the ship.

If you are prone to seasickness and prefer a feeder cabin on the lower deck, you may not want an upgrade that can land you directly in front or aft of the ship, where it is more powerful.

If you’re sensitive to noise and specifically choose a room away from noisy elevators and Lido Floors, you’ll want to say no to a cabin upgrade that doesn’t guarantee a quiet zone.

Tour groups that book close to each other will not accept an upgrade that could split them between different decks.

When that cruise ship cabin upgrade offer arrives, think about how strongly you feel about the cabin’s location. If location is important, you’ll want to decline the upgrade offer.

It’s so expensive

Not all cruise cabin upgrades are free. Usually, cruise lines offer a discount on upgrades, which means you’ll pay less for an upgraded room than it costs to book immediately, but more than what you paid for your original cabin. me.

No matter how good a deal looks like, if money is tight, don’t make the upgrade. Save your holiday budget for beachside excursions and fun or indulge on board like date night restaurants and fun cocktails.

You’ll get a bed and bathroom after all, whichever cabin you choose, but you won’t have much fun if you don’t have the budget to spend when you board.

You have booked a specific type of cabin

Some travelers need specific cabins. Guests who use wheelchairs or have mobility difficulties have a reservation purpose accessible cabin with folding shower cubicle and wider doorways. Families can book interconnecting or designated cabins family friendly room with an extra bathroom or can sleep five or six people. Wellness enthusiasts book spa cabins for Zen décor and thermal suite perks.

If you’ve booked a particular cabin type for some reason, don’t accept the upgrade offer. Usually, a cruise line can’t guarantee they’ll upgrade you from an accessible cabin or spa to a nicer cabin. In addition, the upgrade offer applies to a single cabin, not a pair of connecting rooms.

Accept the upgrade and you will lose the amenities you carefully selected when you originally booked. You don’t want to pay extra to find yourself in a room that doesn’t meet your needs.

You may not get all the perks

Free perks are a popular booking offer used by some cruise lines. Depending on the type of cabin you book, you’ll be rewarded with an onboard credit or a selection of a number of freebies, such as an accompanying beverage package or a shore excursion credit.

When you accept an upgrade offer, you won’t receive the booking privileges associated with the higher room type (although you will receive any room-based perks, like access to special concierge services). special or priority exit). Worse yet, you could actually lose the privileges you already have.

How? If you booked a cruise and then noticed that the price has dropped, you can upgrade yourself by rebooking a nicer cabin for a lower price. In doing so, you will generally lose your previously booked privileges and be eligible for the current promotion only.

For example, if you booked a promotion that offers free Wi-Fi and $100 in-flight credit, but the current offer focuses on low prices and $50 in-flight credit, you will lose your internet plan and half your machine credit when you re-register for a cabin upgrade.

Decide if the trade-off between a nicer cabin and your existing booking perks is worth it. Otherwise, don’t go for a cabin upgrade.

Upgrading isn’t good enough

You should only say yes to a passenger cabin upgrade if it helps you get a nicer cabin. However, what a cruise line claims to have a better cabin may not actually be worth more in your eyes.

For example, cruise lines divide all cabins in the same category (e.g. all outboard cabins) into subcategories, based on location, layout, size, and perks. A feeder cabin inside the upper deck may be considered more desirable and cost more than an inner cabin on the lower deck at the aft of the ship.

A cruise line can give you an upgrade of its kind, switching from one balcony cabin to a “better” balcony cabin, rather than to a mini suite. If you don’t care about the cabin location, don’t do the cabin upgrade. You will end up paying more for a room that is essentially the same as the one you booked for a lower price.

If the upgrade is free, or if the new cabin comes with add-ons, you will use (such as Access special help or spa perks), consider saying yes. However, if the cost of the upgrade doesn’t justify any of the benefits the new room offers, politely decline the tourist cabin upgrade.
