I once woke up on a winter morning here in southern Japan to shoot some rock pools near my house. The temperature outside was about 2 degrees Celsius and my body was completely frozen. I could barely see ahead as I walked because of the steam coming out of my nose and mouth, and when I reached my desired destination, disaster struck. The high tide made it impossible for me to see where I was going, which meant that my hiking boots weren’t suitable for the slippery rocks. I tried a few times but had to abandon my plans mid-trip because I slipped everywhere and feared for my equipment and personal safety.
