Landscape photography is challenging in that you get no control over the placement of elements in the frame, only your position relative to them, and as such, creating compelling compositions can be particularly tricky. If you find yourself struggling, one thing that can help shake you loose is to simply zoom in — sometimes by a lot. Landscape photographers frequently default to using wide angle lenses, and there is certainly nothing wrong with that inclination, but that can also lead to messy or overly busy compositions. And since you can’t control the placement of the elements in the frame, your next best choice is to simply exclude them by employing a narrower angle of view.
