$40k with 560km range: China’s new electric SUV


Volvo’s cousin in China has unveiled a new electric SUV with a claimed range of more than 500 km and a list price that makes it the cheapest electric car in Australia.

Zeekrbelongs to the same Geely group as Volvo and Polestar, has announced pricing and specifications for the ZeekrX SUVs. In China, it will have an announced range of 560km and an equivalent starting price of around $40,000 before hitting the road.

The entry-level model starts at $27,600 (AU$40,657) for the five-seat, rear-wheel drive model, although a more luxurious four-seater is also offered.

Optional one motor has 200kW power and 343Nm torque can complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.8 seconds.

It also offers a 560km range based on China’s more generous CLTC test cycle.

A top-of-the-line, dual-motor four-wheel drive model is also offered. It has 315kW power and 543Nm torque, and there is one motor per shaft.

It is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and can maintain speeds up to 512km range – again, in China’s softer test cycle.

Both models are powered by a 66kWh battery pack with NMC chemical.

ZeekrX uses Geely’s electric motor and silicon carbide battery technology.

Inside, car owners can choose from a 4- or 5-seat configuration. There are four interior color options including navy blue with cream, navy blue with green, brown with cream, gray with cream, all with rose gold accents.

According to the manufacturer, the interior boasts plenty of space, while the 1.2-meter-long panoramic glass sunroof is designed to give the vehicle an airy feel from behind the wheel.

Other interior features include a 5.7-litre center console, heated and cooled, wireless phone charging, lounge-style reclining front seats and folding rear seat cushions… also foldable plane.

The interior is full of screens including a digital instrument cluster, a 24.3-inch head-up display and a 14.6-inch floating infotainment system that slides on the dashboard for the passengers. .

Trunk capacity is 363 liters with the rear seats upright and 1182 liters with the rear seats flat.

The size of the vehicle can be closely related to a Volvo EX30, because the Geely group also owns Volvo and Polestar. It measures 4450mm long, 1836mm wide, 1572mm tall and has a 2750mm wheelbase.

The ZeekrX is a bit smaller than the Smart#1 with a length of only 20mm and a height of 64mm that distinguishes the cousins.

ZeekrX will be manufactured in China and was recently confirmed for Europe.

Zeekr also plans to enter the US market, based on a foreign report says the brand filed a confidential initial public offering (IPO) in the United States last year.

With plans to enter Europe, Zeekr hopes to double its annual sales to 140,000 units.
