Driven by $400,000 law juveniles, the Ocala Breeders 2-Year-Old and Racing-Age Horse Sale started with mixed results June 12 at Ocala, Fla., yielding low totals than a year ago but increased at an average and medium level.
Bill Childs bought the session’s top horse for $400,000, adding to the large stock of fast working yearlings he acquired earlier this year at OBS. Dark bay or dirty brown consigned by Tom McCrocklin as Hip 187 went over the quarter mile in :20 2/5 before the sale.
Childs and his son Alex, both of Fort Worth, Texas, head the CSLR Racing association.
“She did what you almost have to do anymore in a 2-year-old sale to get the reward,” McCrocklin said. “You have to glide fast, you have to look good, you have to gallop fast and you need to pass all the veterinary supervision and there’s a lot of that. Once you get over all those hurdles, sometimes when you will receive the reward.”
During the first three-day sales session, 173 lots were sold out of a total of 259 lots offered, generating total sales of $6,825,500, a decrease of 15%. A total of 350 were cataloged on the first day.
Last year, 225 units were sold in the corresponding session, generating $8,047,900 in revenue, a total compiled by BloodHorse to calculate post-sale transactions. Such a sale means that the horse is not sold in the ring but is sold by mail or privately after the horse leaves the ring.
On Wednesday, 86 did not meet their reserves, the RNA rate was 33%. The mean and median prices increased to $39,454 (up 10%) and $21,000 (up 5%), respectively. Last year, again with after-sales figures, the median was $35,768 and the median was $20,000.
This year’s sales have been favorable at the top of the market, less so in the middle and bottom of it, and McCrocklin said the June sale continues that trend.
“If you have a horse that stands out, like we have today, they will always be the ones who want to buy a filly like that,” McCrocklin said. But it’s the middle part of the bell curve that really struggles. Nice horses but maybe not the measurements that this horse has. Not an easy time, not a galloping time. These horses are having a hard time being sold.”

Session leader, bred in Kentucky by Newstead Corp. from Dixie Alliance mare Southern Silence is a half-brother to four black runners, including the Ohio-bred stakes winners liberate, release, free (gem house ) And Spanish (daredevil ). However, the latter also performed well in rated company, entering the 2020 Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course when he was 2 years old.
Hip 187 was purchased for $80,000 at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She then went unsold to consignor Halcyon Hammock Farm at the Ocala Breeders 2-Year-Old In-Training Spring Sale when bidding stalled at $190,000 after the previous days extended further: 10. She then landed in the June sale.
One of the top colts of 2017, Tiz the Law won the Belmont Stakes (G1) as a 3-year-old during the COVID-19 impacted season of 2020. He entered school in 2021 and is currently receive a $20,000 fee at Ashford Study in Versailles, Ky.
His first foals, 2-year-olds this year, have been popular at juvenile auctions, including a filly that brought $1.9 million in the sale Spring prices in April.
Two fillies were also honored with the second highest price of the session at $250,000. Selling at that price is my daughter’s Real (Hip 25) went Legion Bloodstock, dealer, from Pick View consignment, and one Munnings filly (Hip 34) sold for the same price to Holly and David Wilson from the Britton Peak consignment. The former works longer in :10 2/5 and the latter in :09 4/5.
