3DS eShop Spotlight – Dillon’s Rolling Western

Who made it?

Published by Nintendo itself, the game is from developer Vanpool, which has a history in music and computer software. It has worked on the music of many previous Nintendo games and it designed mini games in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Most importantly, however, Vanpool is the developer of Tingle’s freshly picked Rosy Rupeeland.

Nowadays, Vanpool mainly helps HAL Labs on Kirby games, has worked on Kirby fighter 2, Kirby and the Forgotten LandAnd Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe.

What is the premise?

You are a tatu. That’s all you need to know.

Okay, more seriously, Dillon’s Rolling Western is a mix of action game and tower defense, and you have to defend various villages from Grocks, monsters that look like rocks know walk. Dillon (tatu) has the ability to roll into them, but villagers may need to frequently support him with some defensive towers.

You have three days to defend each village before moving on to a new village, but you don’t need to constantly defend as enemies only appear at night. Each day is divided into three phases – day, evening and night. During the day, you can explore, mine resources, and feel the world. When night falls, you need to protect the town. Then at night, settle in with a bite or practice your moves.

Why should I play it?

There really isn’t anything else like this on the 3DS, and it’s the beginning of a very unique IP in the Nintendo catalog. The game also has two sequels — Dillon’s Rolling Western: The Last Ranger And Dillon’s Deadly Heat Cutterthe latter is physically available.

But this entire franchise is currently stuck on the 3DS and hasn’t been re-released anywhere else, which is really unfortunate. It’s a simplified, stylized tower defense genre, with a mix of anthropomorphic creatures and characters thrown in for fun. After all, who doesn’t want to play as a shotgun?

Also, you might recognize Dillon if you’ve played smash the Wii U, 3DSor Supremebecause he comes in the form of Trophy, Support Trophy, and Soul.

how much is this?

$9.99USD / £8.99 / 9.99€. The Last Ranger also has the same price tag. If you want to complete the trilogy, you’ll have to spend $39.99USD / £34.99 / 39.99 € However, for the Digital Die Heat Cutter.
