I also have a picky dachshund! He gained a bit of weight so I put some cooked chickpeas in his pellets… the look I got was hilarious! He put peas in his mouth then looked up at me and he was not pleased with his mother! He eats them, but he doesn’t care about them.

I have a doxie that lived to be almost 17 years old. I will feed him the same foods we eat: Chicken, fish, eggs, brown rice, carrots, peas, broccoli, apples, raw walnuts. The key with this great breed is to keep them lean. They are very susceptible to hip dysplasia and neck problems, so the worst thing for them is to get heavy. Also, try to keep them active. They love to run. Finally, pay attention to your steps in the house. Good luck

With my two boys, I use high quality dry food, mixed with some cooked vegetables, maybe a piece of meat on the table. I know, I know, everyone says there’s no human food. Even some of today’s high-quality wet foods have vegetables in them. It’s better to stay at home because now you know what’s in there. My Sharky lived to be 12, and my Bruce lived to be 17. But beware, Doxies tend to overeat. Need to see their weight close. It sucks on their long backs. Good luck and God bless.

I sauté a tablespoon of rice in 1/4 cup of water for a few minutes, then add a can of chicken liver and simmer for 30 minutes. Add a pinch of salt and mash with a potato masher. Let cool to warm and serve. This is enough for my 2 doxies for 3 days. On day 2 and 3, simply microwave for 30 seconds to warm up. They just love it.

I’ve been switching my two mini doxies to steamed rice, grilled chicken and black beans for about 6 months now. All abdominal problems are gone. All fussy problems are gone. No more vomiting. Their energy levels are amazing and their fur is soft and shiny. Much healthier than dog food. They also ate half an apple a day with carrots for a snack.

When a dog is a picky eater it’s because the owner gives them too many options, if left intact they could be experiencing a hormonal flare-up, which sometimes affects a young dog’s eating. This happened with my first dog 40 years ago and dog experts say I stop giving him too many choices when he is “working” for me. Lol pick a quality kibble and stick with it. Some crushed ice is also made to rotate to provide different types of protein. Read your labels, follow no products and no more than one pea product, look for dog foods with meat/poultry/seafood protein in the first two or three ingredients. Please note that ingredients are listed by quantity on the label so the first five are the most important and most numerous in terms of quantity. Fromms is a good dog food, but some of their products now contain too many pea products. Natural balance Also a quality food. There are many good foods out there but you have to learn how to read dog food labels yourself.
