Volkswagen confirmed Thursday that it will carry over the refreshed VW ID.4 EV model line to the new model year essentially unchanged — and most of the lineup now offers a ChatGPT-based voice assistant that The ID.4 has been acquired for 2024.
Like the 2024 models that appeared earlier this calendar year, most of the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 lineup offers a more powerful permanent-magnet rear motor, allowing for 282 horsepower. in single-engine or 335-horsepower rear-wheel-drive form. in dual-motor all-wheel-drive form includes a smaller induction motor at the front. Meanwhile, VW has increased the ID.4’s EPA range rating to 263 miles for the AWD version or up to 291 miles for the single-motor version, both with a larger 82-kwh battery pack (77-kwh usable).
The base ID.4 standard, with a 62 kwh battery pack (58 kwh usable) is only offered with rear-wheel drive and retains the 201 hp rear motor previously used in entire product line. It also keeps the old 12.0-inch infotainment screen, while the rest of the lineup gets a 12.9-inch infotainment system with an improved interface, from what we can tell. see in one First drive of the VW ID.4 2024, almost all of the ID.4’s interface bugs when it was first released. It retains Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, but adds improved processing hardware to eliminate lag, a shortcut tray, and climate functions that “stick” to the bottom of the screen. Haptic slider support is now backlit and no longer lags.

It also maintains the embedded ChatGPT functions that VW rolled out in January at CES. Analyzing what VW is doing with or without the help of AI is a challenge. The car company at that time emphasized that nothing had changed for drivers. “There is no need to create a new account, install a new app, or activate ChatGPT,” it summarizes. “If the Volkswagen system cannot answer the request, it will be forwarded anonymously to the AI and the familiar Volkswagen voice will respond.”
Thankfully, VW has emphasized that ChatGPT or its integration partner Cerence do not have access to the vehicle data and that questions and answers “will be deleted immediately to ensure a high level of data protection possible”. At the time, VW said the new voice assistant could help answer general knowledge questions, but in a CES demo, Green Car Reports didn’t find it any easier than searching on Google — or anything more authoritative than Siri, which is saying something.

In 2025, this new assistant is not just for the ID.4. While VW didn’t list exactly which other models in the lineup are equipped with the feature, it said most 2025 models will get it.
While it’s hard to tell what ChatGPT is doing, it’s not going away. VW says it is developing a system based on a large language model, again incorporating AI, for the next generation of car assistants.
VW didn’t give any arrival date for the 2025 ID.4, but they said it will be offered again in a total of seven trim levels. VW did price increase 2024 ID.4, compared to 2023, but they start at $41,160 with the smaller package and $46,300 with the larger package. All versions are eligible for Full $7,500 EV tax creditand with no expected changes to the Tennessee assembly point or trading partner-approved battery supply, we expect 2025 models to continue to be eligible.
