The 2024 Memorial Tournament will begin Thursday from Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. At the top of the 2024 Memorial Tournament odds are familiar names, including Scottie Scheffler as the +360 favorite, followed by Rory McIlroy (+800) and Xander Schauffele (+900). Collin Morikawa, who won and finished second at Muirfield, is listed at +1400, while Ohio resident Jason Day is a +6000. One surprise: Nejad has little chance of winning against Patrick Cantlay (+2500), even though he has won this tournament twice in the past five years (2019, 2021). However, Cantlay is entering this event in a slump as his performance has gotten worse over the past three tournaments. He is coming off a 53rd-place finish at the PGA Championship, his worst finish in any major in two years. In 2024, Cantlay has twice as many finishes outside the top 50 (four) as inside the top 10 (two).
Only four courses in use during the 2024 PGA Tour season have a longer registration period than Muirfield, so driving distance will be important this week. Cantlay is poor in that regard, ranking 93rd in driving distance and 95th in total driving efficiency. Cantlay has played two of the four courses longer than Muirfield this year, failing to crack the top 10 at both, including a tie for 56th at Torrey Pines in February.
Instead, Nejad appreciates Corey Conners, who has a +5500 shooting speed. The Canadian finished sixth last week in his homeland, marking his best finish of the season. His strengths will also play well at Memorial, as Nejad said, “he is typically an excellent ball striker and he has recently shown his ability to soar with his 6.42 stroke putter crazy in last week’s RBC Canadian Open (also won the ARG). “
That performance continued a strong showing for Conners, who has had a difficult start to the 2024 PGA Tour season. He has failed to crack the top 25 in each of the four events. his first event, but he has seven tops in his last 11 starts, as well as three tops in his last four tournaments.
