2024 BYD Seal 06 GT revealed ahead of official launch this month – electric hot hatch with up to 421 PS

BYD has released the first official images of its upcoming electric hot hatch, the Seal 06 GT, which is set to make its official debut later this month at the Chengdu Auto Show. The model was previously previewed by Ocean-M Concept at this year’s China Auto Show in Beijing and will be positioned between Seal sedan and Dolphin.

According to information from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Seal 06 GT will be available in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The former will feature a rear-mounted electric motor rated at 218 PS (215 hp or 160 kW) while the latter is said to deliver 421 PS (416 hp or 310 kW).

The dual-motor version and its reported power output will be MG4 The XPower EV is in the cards, although its rival has slightly more power at 435 PS (429 hp or 320 kW). We’ll have to wait for BYD’s official performance figures to see how the Seal 06 GT stacks up.

What is certain is that the Seal 06 GT is a larger car by comparison, measuring 4,630mm long, 1,880mm wide, 1,490mm high and having a wheelbase of 2,820mm. The MG4 EV XPower is smaller at 4,287mm long, 1,836mm wide, 1,516mm high and has a wheelbase of 2,705mm.

Design-wise, the production car ditches many of the aggressive additions seen on the Ocean-M concept. There are still some familiar details retained, though, like the slanted headlights, full-width taillights, and pop-out door handles.

Inside, the Seal 06 GT has a rather “organic” design with many curved surfaces. The digital instrument cluster and central touchscreen also look quite large, while the two-layer center console has a gear selector and function buttons arranged on a circle right in front of the central air-conditioning vents.

When BYD revealed the Ocean-M concept, it said the production version could cost between 150,000 and 200,000 yuan (about RM91,000 and RM122,000). The Seal sedan we have here retails for RM180,430 OTR excluding insurance for the base Premium (Extended Range) version with a 313 PS (308 hp or 230 kW) rear-mounted electric motor, while the top-spec Performance version with a 530 PS (523 hp or 390 kW) dual-motor setup retails for RM200,430. Would you like the Seal 06 GT to slot below the Seal sedan?
