2023 Ford Ranger V6 v 4 cylinder: Dragparison

So you want a 2023 Ford Ranger. Join the club!

One big question buyers are wondering is, should they go with the newly hyped V6 diesel or save the $3000 and go for a bi-turbo four instead?

Sure, the V6 offers more perks, full-time 4×4, and bragging rights, but the high demand means you’ll likely be waiting for yours longer than if you opted for the four-cylinder. -flax, this also happens to drink a little less fuel.

We managed to get a Ranger V6 in mid-range XLT guise ($64,190 before on-road costs), along with the four-cylinder Ranger Wildtrak ($67,190).

While the XLT’s V6 is about 30kg heavier, the four-cylinder Wildtrak comes with more equipment, so the actual weight difference turns out to be around 10kg. Error all…

Another point to note: it got severely wet at our test facility, so while the comparison times are still useful, a dry runway will naturally yield quicker efforts for both.

Here, Paul Maric presents a detailed video of two Ford Rangers facing off against each other. Make sure to see the embed above or click through to ours YouTube channel.

Paul and crew put the pair against several testing procedures:

  • Compare basic sounds, see which one has the best discharge note
  • Many times 0-100km/h for both
  • Head-to-head racing over 1/8 mile
  • Sprints compared 1/4 mile earlier

We made sure to play with different drivetrain ‘modes’ and different settings for the 4×4 system as appropriate, as well as turn off the traction controls. Both Rangers run on all-terrain tires, but from different brands.

The 3.0 liter V6 The ‘Lion’ single turbocharged diesel engine is offered in Ranger XLT and above, making 184kW power 3250 rpm and 600Nm torque from 1750 rpm, mated to 10 speed auto.

It runs a permanent 4 × 4 system with road-oriented ‘4A’ AWD modes as well as traditional 2H (rear-wheel drive), 4H (high range) and 4L (low range) modes.

Fun fact: This engine is derived from the one used in the Ford F-150, but naturally, the smaller Ranger presented some packing challenges.

Ford Australia changed the oil pan, made it ready for larger angles, changed the turbo and intakes, and re-tested it all.

So the V6s demonstrated 1.4 seconds faster to 100km/h in their respective 0-100km/h sprints. But in head-to-head races over 200m and 400m, there is only a 0.6 second gap.

It looks like Ford has limited the V6’s overall output here, but for those who need that extra growl – especially those pulling cars – it still seems like a better bet.

Next step? Perhaps the Ranger V6 compared to the Amarok V6 goes in a different drag?
