2023 British Open wallet, bonus: Payouts, winnings for Brian Harman, field from record $16.5 million fund

Lifting the Claret Jug at the conclusion of the 151st Open Championship this Sunday is one of the most anticipated moments that can happen in golf this season. Brian Harman earned that honor with four days of pound-for-pound competition at Royal Liverpool, including one of the best performances in a major league we’ve seen in a long time.

In addition to being able to match the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as grand slam champions at Royal Liverpool, Harman will take home some hardware and a $3 million check by claiming the winner’s prize.

The R&A raised its wallet for the 2023 Open significantly, bringing it to $16.5 million from the $14 million total payout available last year when the Open was held on the Old Court in St. Andrews. Even though the R&A is paying more golfers than ever, The Open is still behind the US Open ($20 million), Masters ($18 million) and the PGA Championship ($17.5 million) among key payouts.

“Our goal is to ensure The Open remains the pinnacle of world golf and we have nearly doubled our prize pool since 2016,” R&A CEO Martin Slumbers said ahead of the tournament. “While we are seeing a significant increase in prize money in men’s professional games, we are fulfilling our broader obligation to the sport by advancing the AIG Women’s Open, strengthening routes in elite amateur matches, and encouraging more people around the world to play golf. We believe achieving this long-term balance is vital to the sport’s future.”

In 2016, the total amount of bonuses paid was $8.5 million. Due to the exchange rate, it was actually higher in 2014 when McIlroy won his third major league title at Royal Liverpool. The wallet that week was over $9.2 million.

Below is an overview of the full amount and individual payouts for the 151st Open Championship.
