2023 BMW XM leaked in patent application

Product BMW XM may be less powerful than the previewed concept, but its exterior styling remains the same.

Leaked patent images of the production SUV from the Japanese patent office have been shared on Forum BMW iX before the official reveal later this year.

Production will begin in late 2022 at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant.

At the front, there are more visible headlights than the headlights of concept underneath the daytime running lights are extremely thin.

The lower front bumper area has also been tweaked with more visible air intakes and what appears to be a radar for active safety features and driver assistance.

The side details are the same, albeit with more conventional door handles and slightly smoother fenders.

At the rear, the taillights have been updated. Instead of the thin lights that form the contour of the trunk, there are more conventional taillights – if those are still quite slim by BMW standards.

The trapezoidal outlets are also slightly more square, while the rear bumper and diffuser use more contrasting plastic trim – possibly black.

Some of these changes from the concept were leaked due to a photo of a only partially camouflage the production car this early year.

The spy car also has an unusual yellow border around the grille and sides.

Inside, the interior is mostly covered with a steering wheel, gearshift lever and center console that appear to be identical to those of the concept, while materials are finished in deep turquoise and the Display BMW’s curve appears.

It remains to be seen whether the production model adopts some of the more exotic interior design cues of the concept, including the sculpted header, lighting, vintage brown leather trim at the front and quilted velvet upholstery at the back.

The XM is the first SUV designed from the ground up as an M model, and will also be the first BMW M electric vehicle.

It will use a “newly developed” V8 combined with an electric motor, with system outputs claimed to be 480kW power and 800Nm of torque.

As previously reportedthis is 70kW and 200Nm down from what BMW claims the Concept XM has produced.

It is unclear whether BMW will leave room for an even more powerful version of the XM in the future, possibly producing closer to the output of the concept, or whether the production XM never meant it. such a strong determination.

BMW still claims the XM has an electric range of up to 80km, according to WLTP testing.

For now, the Bavarian automaker is keeping the details around the high-voltage battery capacity, 0-100km/h sprint time, top speed and efficiency ratings secret.

The XM has a hybrid-specific M xDrive all-wheel drive system that includes an electronic rear differential lock in the rear transmission.

As standard, the XM will come with M adaptive suspension and model-specific M brakes, while alloy wheels in sizes up to 23 inches will be available.

For the first time in a BMW M, the XM will feature electromechanical roll stabilization supported by a 48V electrical system, as well as rear-wheel steering for low-speed cornering and stability when driving at high speeds. high.

After the concept was revealed last November, a BMW Australia spokesman said: “The BMW M brand and the BMW X range mean a lot to Australia – one in five BMWs sold in Australia. These carry the M badge and the BMW X vehicle represents over 60% of our total product sales.

“With that in mind, the BMW Concept XM has immediate appeal to our market. If the production sample is made by us, we will definitely provide it to our customers.”

It’s not the only plug-in hybrid performance SUV in the works, with Lamborghini set to showcase a plug-in hybrid Urus in 2024.

Porsche has got a hot plug-in hybrid version of it Cayenne called the Turbo S E-Hybrid, uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 combined with an electric motor and 17.9kWh lithium-ion battery and produces a total system-wide output of 500kW and torque. 900Nm.

This powertrain could find its way into the electrified Urus.
