Red Bull Rookies Race One
Max Quiles proved to be the master of the most dangerous conditions to win the Race 1 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in Mugello.
The 14-year-old Spaniard keeps his head up while those around him, and mostly in front of him, are losing their minds. In second place are 21-year-old Tatchakorn Buasri from Thailand and Rico Salmela, 14, from Finland, holding 15-year-old Angel Piqueras from Spain in third.
It was a contest of attrition with New Zealand’s Gabin Planques, Casey O’Gorman and Cormac Buchanan, all of whom took the lead but were relegated.
Max Quiles – P1
“I came from Murcia and there it never rained, it was always hot, it rained when I took the exam in Portimão and I remembered a few things from that. So actually I was pretty comfortable in the wet. In the last couple of laps, I slowed down so I don’t have a crash or anything like that and I’m really happy to win. I want to win and I am trying to win. When I caught the leaders I was really determined and if they didn’t fall I would have tried by all means. I know I can catch them, at least I’ll try. ”
15-year-old New Zealander Buchanan had positive leads for three rounds but was disappointed by the drop.
Cormac Buchanan
“Very disappointing, this is a great opportunity for me. I see the gap down a bit and I try to push a little bit more but not too much, I just point into the corner as usual and buckle the front. Devastated but we showed potential and tomorrow we will try again”.
Jacob Roulstone was 16th, weathering difficult conditions to get home safely, while much of the pitch was left out. Compatriot Harrison Voight did not participate.

Race number two of the Red Bull rookies
Collin Veijer stepped out of Filippo Farioli’s KTM line-up and picked up his identical RC 250 R alongside and in front as the pair led a team of 13 Red Bull Moto GP rookies across the Mugello finish line in just two seconds .
It was a superb performance by the 16-year-old Dutchman, who was never too far ahead alongside the 17-year-old Italian postman Farioli.
It was one of the really great Cup races and third went to 21-year-old Thai Tatchakorn Buasri, just a millisecond ahead of 15-year-old Briton Eddie O’Shea.
Conditions were very different from Saturday’s players and 15 laps in near-perfect conditions allowed the young players to reach their full potential with no one coming close to disrupt and positions to be swapped. change many times at every corner.
Collin Veijer
“I know what I want to do in the final round. I thought I could get far enough that they couldn’t catch me in front of the line. I tried it a few rounds before and I think it’s possible. So I did it on the last lap to create some distance but then Filippo got through and I thought, ‘maybe that’s not so bad’, and I was behind him and focused on making a perfect run through the last corner and into his stream. I don’t know how close the others are behind me, I just focus on Filippo. It’s great to win. I tried to get out but I ran too far and I couldn’t do it, great race. ”
Cormac Buchanan had a better Race 2nd, finishing 11th after fighting to get back into the lead. From fighting in seventh place on one point, Buchanan dropped to P17, before recovering to almost make it into the top 10.
Cormac Buchanan – P11
“Yes, that’s a folks! This is a great race for me. I had a plan and I achieved the goal I set for myself this weekend. At the start of the race I moved forward but to be honest it was not amazing progress. The front group pulled a small distance and I knew I had a lot better speed so I focused on closing the gap for the front man. The group I joined wanted to fight when I was more ready to join the lead. With 6 laps left, I got there – the pace was fast and I settled into the rhythm. I passed a few riders and studied the riders ahead to find out my strengths and where they were faster. In this race there is no such thing as a clean move. I had to put my elbow out and the contact was routine. With four more laps to go, I entered P7 and felt quite comfortable, able to run at the pace of the leaders. Unfortunately in the penultimate lap the two riders came together and I was tagged dominoes so I lost a lot of time and was relegated to P17. I’ve been trying like crazy to get back to my vantage point but I can only manage with P11. Congratulations to my team AGR Teammate Collin Veijer on an epic win! I was 1.6 seconds away from the checkered flag in a very fast race. I set the second fastest lap time, which is a huge positive as well as it’s PB for me in Italy. I finally started to feel like the person I used to be in Portimão. This spurred me on for the next round in Sachsenring and it was a great way to end the weekend. A lot has been learned this weekend and much of it has been positive. We have made strides and need to continue on this trajectory for the upcoming races. Thanks so much for all the supportive messages throughout the weekend – it fuels the fire! It’s a great honor for MotoGP racing director Mike Webb to take time out of his extremely busy schedule to hit the pits and check in after my race. Sometimes it feels like rare kiwis here on the lawns like they’re at home, so it’s nice to hear a familiar voice. Now is the time to relax for the day before diving back into training to get ready for the next! ”
Jacob Roulstone finished in 20th, but it was a much closer run, 22,091 seconds behind the leader.
Jose Rueda holds the top spot in the standings after Round 3 with 101 points, five points ahead of Collin Veijer, with Race #1 winner Max Quiles coming in third with 71 points. Harrison Voight dropped to 10th after not being able to play in the playoffs, with Jacob Roulstone in P19 and Cormac Buchanan in P20, both with nine points each.
