2022 Masters: Cam Smith’s final trilogy ruined his green coat controversy, halving his prize money
Cameron Smith could have paid for himself the 2022 Masters, a green jacket and large amounts of change on Sunday after a flub-filled 12th hole. Moments after he took a 36-hole and 54-hole win over leader Scottie Scheffler at par-4 11 to cut his deficit to three, Smith immediately turned and lost three strokes with three bogeys in a challenging par 3.
Smith’s mistake may have finally decided mastersand it almost certainly had a big effect on his payout from a record $15 million Masters wallet.
His first strike on the 155-yard hole was shorter and only splashed on the green. After the drop, he had no chance with another water balloon and the water balloon hit the water balloon instead. From there, he made his approach well past the post and then beat his effort in a double save before scoring six on the scorecard.
It was Smith’s first treble or worse on the PGA Tour since the final round of the 2021 Visitors’ Championship and it was arguably the most important round of his youth career.
He was on his way to second place in the tournament, paying $1.62 million, but went on to finish T3, he made $870,000 instead – a $750,000 difference.
Smith said of his 12th attempt: “Just a really bad swing at the wrong time. “That’s actually a really good number. It’s a really nice 9-iron. Didn’t even try to get close to that pin, and, yes, just a really poor swing. ”
Scheffler tied for 12th as part of a massive push to dramatically alter the leaderboard, pushing Smith down to third and Rory McIlroy to second. Moments later, McIlroy tries to find birdies on the 18th to end up like club leader at the age of 7 under in Week. Scheffler, however, finished in 10th place below, take home the blue jacket and the first major championship of his career. McIlroy finished second and Smith – who played the last six holes at under 1 – finished in a third draw with Shane Lowry in bottom five.
“I’m obviously very disappointed after the 12th hole today, but just stop there and try to finish on a positive note,” Smith said.
