2022 Ducati DesertX hides modern bravery under a classic cover



Ducati kept its promise to put the Desert X concept launched in 2019 into production. Now called DesertX, it looks a lot like the heritage-infused design study introduced two years ago, but it’s received a number of updates that will make driving even more enjoyable.

Most of the key factors identified well-received concept calculated on the conventional production model. Inspired by the classic Paris-Dakar racers running on Ducati and enduro of the 1980s motorcycle, DesertX wears a white outfit with red, gray and black accents. It also features the futuristic interpretation of the twin round headlights seen on the Cagiva Elefant, which first appeared in the 1990 version of the Paris-Dakar, and it rides on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels. Both are wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires.

Bigger changes are found on the spec sheet. While the mechanical concept relates to the Scrambler 1100, the final version is powered by a 937 cc two-cylinder engine tuned to develop 110 hp at 9,250 rpm and torque. 68 pound-feet at 6,500 rpm. The twin is an evolution of the water-cooled Testastretta engine that powers it Multistrada V2, among other models, and it’s connected to a six-speed transmission whose bottom five gear ratios are made shorter for better acceleration on loose surfaces. The first and second are made significantly shorter; however, Friday is left long to ensure the DesertX remains suitable for long highway trips.

Two riding modes first appeared on DesertX. Enduro reduces the power of the engine and adjusts the electronic steering aids to make it easier for less experienced riders to go off-road. Rally is the opposite: It reduces electronic noise to keep experienced riders happy.

Ducati is primarily known for its road- and track-focused bikes, but it has more than enough experience to develop an off-road ready suspension. Up front, the 445-pound DesertX has Kayaba forks with about 9 inches of travel; behind the aluminum swingarm providing about 8.6 inches of travel. Factor in the nearly 10-inch ground clearance and the DesertX sounds extremely good when traveling on the road.

Staying at home on the sidewalk should also be equal. The driver and passenger seating positions are set up for comfort, it can be fitted with a variety of bags and boxes that provide around 4 cubic feet of cargo space, and adventurers who need plenty of range than the standard 5.5-gallon gas tank supply can order a second two-gallon tank for an additional fee. It’s mounted near the back of the bike and can be switched by just pressing a switch on the dashboard. The riding range is yet to be released.

Ducati dealers across the US will begin receiving the DesertX 2022 in June 2022. Prices start at $16,795.
