Ellis Zorro proved above the competition to win the BOXXER Cruiserweight series at the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester this evening.
The 29-year-old (14-0.6 KOs) rarely struggled in his three fights as he looked after James Farrell and then Jamie Smith before beating teacher Ricky Reeves in the final.
The tournament’s most beloved moment of the night came in his quarterfinal when Jay Farrell popped out the gate in the first round. It wasn’t long before Zorro had the fight under his own control and outmaneuvered his opponent for points.
Jamie Smith and Jack Fay brought the fast and furious format to life in their quarterfinals. Two men died of skin with the only punching power in town in the first half. Fay was then forced to his knees as Smith screwed up and ended the match in the second half.
Finalist Reeves began his part facing half-Scottish, half-Pakistani Annes Taj, whose wild tactics proved his undo when an overhead knock knocked him down. We’re at the end of the first inning. Behind 10-8 on the card Taj roars and throws all possible in seconds. His efforts continued into the third round as each man met in the middle and turned. It was Reeves who received the nod, though.
In the final match on stage eight, Johnny Nelson mentor Sheldon McDonald overcame Wolverhampton direct Ryan Cotterell. A jab knocked Cotterell out on the first game and he started getting tagged for fun but for his credit he pushed McDonald’s back on the second round and managed to overtake his opponent in the second round. third turn. McDonald’s smart boxing backed by the knockdown was enough to make the decision.
The semi-finals pit Zorro against Smith and Reeves against McDonald’s.
Once again Zorro doesn’t look like he has to be top gear to beat his opponents. Smith ate the apple continuously and did little to disturb the apple cart.
Reeves and McDonald, good friends and partners, delivered the drama in the second semi-final.
McDonald controlled the first half, the second half was a tighter fight but the fight looked like it was his to lose, and he did. Reeves landed the best punch of the match in the third round with a heavy right hand. It took energy from McDonald’s, who allowed Reeves to take advantage. The Sheffield cruiser was wounded, he held on but left and right set up the final hit that severely disappointed McDonald with 56 seconds to end the match.
The final proved to be a not so smooth affair. Reeves tried his best to trouble Zorro by punching the boxer then moving inwards to upset the matter, but he played into the favorites’ hands. Zorro, from Bromley, ran into trouble with Reeves in the final seconds of the second half. An upper cut left the teacher reeling and in the third session he was caught inside near the end to seal victory for Zorro, who walked away with a £40,000 prize.
