Zomato, Swiggy facing nationwide outage during lunch hour; Check out netizens’ reactions

Food ordering apps Zomato and Swiggy faced a nationwide outage on Wednesday during lunchtime, making it difficult for customers trying to order.

On Wednesday afternoon, Zomato and Swiggy, the major food ordering apps, were facing a nationwide outage. Both apps experienced technical issues and were unresponsive for almost an hour. Online platform Downdetector recorded more than 3,000 reports of outages for Zomato and 789 reports of outages for Swiggy around 2pm. According to some reports, the outage was caused by Amazon Web Services (AWS), a cloud services platform, which runs both applications. While both Zomato and Swiggy are now up and running, the apps are still glitching and it doesn’t seem like the problem is completely resolved. Currently, while the front end of the applications is working, the payment and ordering gateway is not fully operational yet.

The power outage occurred right at the start of lunchtime, when many people ordered food online. With both major food delivery platforms down, many users took to Twitter to complain about the issue. One user tweeted, “Ordered from Domino’s Pizza through your app. I called Domino’s, they said we haven’t received any such orders. Chat is also not working and customer care does not pick up. Many others also complained about the payment being deducted but not being able to place the order.

Zomato, Swiggy Face Nationwide Outage, Users Suffering

As complaints on Twitter grew, both platforms confirmed that they were experiencing technical difficulties. Zomato replied to one user: “Hi, we are facing a temporary issue. Rest assured that our team is working on this and we will be up and running soon.” Similarly, to the complaint against Swiggy, the company responded: “We are currently unable to process your request because we are experiencing technical limitations. Don’t worry, our best minds are on it and we’ll be up and running soon.”

The root cause behind this whole issue seems to be that AWS is facing server issues at the end causing technical glitches for not only Zomato and Swiggy but also several other client applications.

Immediately after the platforms experienced outages, #Zomato and #Swiggy started trending on Twitter. While many users were frustrated by their bad experience on the platforms, others started joking about the situation.

Twitter user Ankita Giri wrote, “Is Zomato for everyone or has God finally decided to take matters into His own hands cz just to lose weight ab hone se raha.”

The official manager of Netflix India also decided to look into the situation and posted, “If apps don’t work, who will take Peaky Blinders orders”?

You should wait until both companies confirm that their services are back up and running before placing an order.
