Women in Iran’s underground metal field
Iran doesn’t seem likely to become a hotspot for heavy metal, especially since Western pop music has been officially banned there since the Islamic revolution of 1979. Still, despite the risk of being beaten up scams and long prison sentences, the genre continues to thrive in secret underground locations.
Some of the biggest names in the country’s heavy metal music scene are women, despite the fact that they are forbidden to sing publicly, except in choirs or female-only companies. A new short film titled “Watch us scream in Tehran” highlights the danger they face.
