It’s been more than 10 years since The Wizard of Waverly—the show that really put Selena on the map—aired its final episode on Disney Channel, but Selena + chef the star admits that while she’s mostly trying to focus on the future, that’s not always possible.

Selena explains that growing up as a Disney star, she was only 15 years old when The Wizard of Waverly premiered in October 2007—leading to a very specific, carefully curated education.
“I’m not a wild kid, but I was at Disney, so I had to make sure I didn’t say ‘What the hell?’ in front of anyone,” Selena said. “That’s what I’m also setting myself to be the best role model I can be. Now I think being the best role model is being honest, even with the ugly and complicated parts of myself.”
