When the law fails on animals, we change the law

Although Animal Equality has made significant progress in improving the lives of domestic animals, much remains to be done. By continuing to propose and campaign to change the law and expose cruelty on factory farms, we hope to create a world where animals are treated with kindness and compassion. . With the continued support of enthusiastic donors every month, we are committed to making a difference in the lives of all animals.

A letter from Sarah Hanneken, Legal Counsel for Animal Equality:

A wise man once said, “The greatness of a nation can be judged by how it treats its weakest member.”

But what if I told you that the most vulnerable among us are still suffering with closed doors?

You see, many of the animal welfare laws in our book do not apply to domestic animals and those that do are often not enforced.

As the Legal Advocacy Advisor of Animal Equality, I have witnessed first-hand how many shocking practices on industrial farms are completely legal. Painful mutilation, inhumane transportation conditions and painful killing methods just a few examples.

So what is an animal advocate to do?

When the law doesn’t suit animals, we change the law.

That’s why Animal Equality’s recent proposal for Changes to the Mexican Constitution were passed by the House of Representativespaved the way for the nation’s first animal welfare legislation.

It’s also why we campaign in the Mexican states of Jalisco and Hidalgo, which have criminalized many forms of abuse of domestic animals in recent years.

Meanwhile, in many cities, we are fighting to end the sale of foie gras, a luxury item sometimes found in fine dining. People speak out against foie gras because it requires force-feeding ducks and geese until their livers become enlarged and diseased.

And in Spain, Animal Equality is fighting for transparency in the industrial livestock industry. The government now requires supervision in all slaughterhouses, but this video is only shown to people in the industry. We are asking for an end to this self-regulation.

Finally, for those who violate applicable cruelty to animals laws, We are demanding consequences. Thanks to investigative footage, a British dairy farm worker received a 12-month suspended prison sentence in 2017 for punching and kicking newborn cows.

The bottom line is, none of this could be done without our investigators.

If the Animal Equality investigators don’t go secret in 34 slaughterhouses in MexicoWe won’t record pigs being beaten with an ax and dropped into boiling water, or sheep’s heads ripped from their bodies while sane.

Without the Animal Equality investigators, the world would never have seen Brazilian underground slaughterhouse skins animals alive or attack them with a sledgehammer. We will not be able to use this evidence to warn people in Brazil about the limits of self-regulation.

Without intrepid investigators, residents and legislators in cities across the United States might not have witnessed ducks and geese raised for raw foie gras covered in blood and vomit. vomit, many with their beaks broken, like the living lying among the dead.

And without Animal Equal’s enumerator, Abuse and neglect arrested at Summit Calf Ranch in Nebraska will never be released.

Calf 1578 lay on the concrete floor of Summit Calf Ranch, with no food or water. Its two hind hooves have separated from the foot tissue.

Without the investigators, Animal Equality’s legal team would not have the critical evidence we need to act on.

And without our monthly sponsors, there would be no investigation.

You see, these surveys often take months to complete. The only way to sustain them is to rely on our monthly network of passionate supporters – people like you – who join us in making history.

These are people from all walks of life – teachers, grandparents, nurses, entrepreneurs – who stick together for a common goal: create a world where a baby calf can drink milk from its foster mother, a lamb can play with its siblings, or a piglet can feel the sun the sky and breathe in the fresh air.

They are game changers, pioneers and a mighty force that makes history.

Just like you, they are people who demand accountability, transparency and animal protection by law.

Investigators need you, I need you, and – most importantly – animals need you.

Consider becoming a monthly fundraiser for Animal Equality and help create a world where animals are treated with kindness and compassion. Your support can help us continue to propose and campaign to change the law and expose atrocities on factory farms, ultimately making a positive difference in the lives of people. all animals.

Will you keep us in the field?
