As Monday wraps up in Kyiv and in Moscow, here are the main developments for the day:
The leaders of Ukraine and Russia said a new phase of Russian activities in Ukraine has begun. Ukrainian officials call it battle for Donbas, referring to the eastern region that Moscow had previously forced Kyiv to cede to Russia-aligned separatists. The Kremlin has recognized the two breakaway republics in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions that make up the Donbas.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that “a significant part” of the Russian army is currently taking part in the military operation. The regional governor of Luhansk said Russian forces capture the town of Kreminna. Missiles and shells fell on several Ukrainian cities, with Ukrainian media reporting explosions and sirens of the air raid over hundreds of miles.
