Social media platform X is currently hiding your likes. in one update posted on the platform formerly known as Twitter earlier this week, X’s engineering team said it would “make Likes private for everyone to better protect your privacy.” That means users can still see their own likes, but others can’t – ending a feature that many have long used.
Change effective Wednesday. As of this afternoon, the “Like” tab appears to only be available on the user’s own profile page. But when accessing other accounts, that tab is no longer there.
Users also received a pop-up message that seemed to indicate this change would get more users involved.
“Liking more posts will make your ‘For You’ feed better,” the announcement reads.
According to the engineering team’s update, the number of likes and other metrics for users’ own posts will still show up under notifications. Posts will still show the number of likes – but the author will be the only one who can see the list of people who liked it.
The option to hide likes was previously only available to paid subscribers. When X announced that choice in September, it speak users can “keep the likes spicy by hiding your likes tab.”
The number of hidden likes is one of many changes has appeared on the platform since billionaire Elon Musk bought it for $44 billion in 2022. In addition to the new name and logo, other changes include the removal of the once-coveted blue check marks want for non-Premium users — and then restore them to a number.
The changes in the app have received mixed feedback on the platform. In the early days X stripped famous officials of their verification badges and news organizationFor example, many people voiced concerns about misinformation. The platform has also faced both growing opposition from users and advertisers amid ongoing concerns about content moderation and hate speech on the San Francisco-based platform, which some researchers say has increased under Musk.
