WGC-Dell Round of 16: Scottie Scheffler could become world No 1 after victory over Billy Horschel

There’s a lot at stake on Saturday morning at the WGC-Dell Match Play, not even simply reaching the afternoon quarterfinals for a spot in the four finals on Sunday. One traveller is playing for a Masters berth and three separate golfers are playing for 1st place in the Official World Golf Ranking. There are layers of drama as games get underway early at the Austin Country Club, and the morning plays out with hype.

Saturday’s debut match was Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm, who have both combined to win three of the last five US Opens, but it only lives up to its bill in that this is either match to go extra holes (more on that below). Kevin Kisner-Adam Scott, who falls asleep early, turns out to be the best of them all.

Let’s take a look at all eight matches and see who advances to the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.

Will Zalatoris go up to 1 overtake Kevin Na: This shot changed a lot in the final holes with Na taking 17th with a superb tee and Zalatoris taking it back in 18th with a birdie putt. They eventually went to four extra holes and Zalatoris, who finished second on the field in Round 16 from tee to green, bested Na with a controllable par-4 13 win.

Kevin Kisner 1 up overtaking Adam Scott: Kisner slipped from hole 3 to hole 16, but somehow won the match despite being down to three with only four holes to go (previously, golfers are 0-185-4 at this course when followed by three with four to go). He won the last four holes with four threes in a row, including an eagle shot on the 16th, and, somewhat amazingly, went on to the quarterfinals against Scott in the most exciting finish of the year. all eight morning matches.

Scottie Scheffler 1 up overtaking Billy Horschel: It was an odd match with some squirrel hits, marked by Scheffler’s wild bird on hole 16 to take the lead. Horschel isn’t anything close to his best, and the results for Scheffler have been huge. This time two months ago, he was considered the best player to have never won the PGA Tour. Now if he wins the next three matches, he will be the number 1 golfer in the world.
