Wayne Maxwell reflects on QLD and looks at Wakefield Park
Wayne Maxwell and Adrian Montic
Ducati Mobility Booster
Trevor Hedge: I’m here with Team McMartin at Wakefield Park after what turned out to be a pretty productive day? (This interview was conducted during a quiz earlier this month)
Wayne: “Yes, for sure, we are grateful that the weather has given us really dry rides, just before lunch and in the afternoon. I think we had four pretty good sessions. We’ve worked through most of what we want to achieve for today, and I think we’ve got a bit of a plan in place. Obviously we had a pretty good bike here last year, so I thought to just try to improve that in some small areas. A little more consistent in the race. ”
Trev: And did you find anything markedly different today, Adrian, that you want to continue on the development path towards the race weekend?
Adrian Monti: “That’s what we spent some time today looking through, we looked at the bike when we raced here last year and tried to see what we’ve learned over the course of the year. last season, as well as how they applied at this circuit. Some of them worked, some of them didn’t. We have data for all of that and we can try and explore more of those. Let’s see what direction we can go tomorrow.”
Trev: It really does look like in Queensland Wayne, as if a lot of your mid-angle speed has abandoned you, that’s where it seems like you’re really bad compared to some of the others, do you realize why like that again?
Wayne: “Well I don’t know earlier, I have to find out right before, that’s the path of development. Obviously our bike was great in Phillip Island, and it was great at Tailem Bend last year, it was good here last year, it was good in Darwin. So I’m sure now that we have a rough idea, add a little more data, we’ll go back to more tracks a second time and try things that worked on other tracks. You know it doesn’t necessarily work for us here, so yeah, we’ll go ahead and we’ll just change it up a bit. It’s a small window on V4 R and when you get it right it obviously works great, and when you don’t, we’ve seen results in Queensland. ”
Adrian: “And beyond that, we’ve been struggling in Queensland since Friday morning and I think we’re going to change a few things in regards to the way we approach Friday and that was my mistake, we went in the wrong direction and we never really recovered.”
Trev: It’s amazing how much you guys put the forks in and out of the bike during training sessions, let alone in between. That’s something I haven’t really seen you do on such a road before, so to see you pursue geometry there more than in the electronic setup is certainly striking.
Adrian: “We just changed our approach to finding the passage of time. It’s different from how we’ve done it everywhere else for the past two years, but we won’t do it again. “
Trev: Obviously you guys have a pretty sophisticated electronic device compared to most of the others, how much time did you spend on that today, on engine brake control, mapping or anything anything else? Anything you can share with us, to clear anything up, or are you going to play cards close to your chest?
Adrian: “Of course we definitely use logging and the electronics play a big part in our bike, but I challenge the claim that it’s more advanced, I think the MoTeC ECU that ASBK offers. Granted, there are more parameters than what we have to change. We have a traction control parameter, they have about twelve. So is it more advanced, no, does it work well? It’s correct.”
Trev: I believe you can use zone-based adjustment on your bike, but on ASBK-approved MoTeC firefighting software, they’ve locked that functionality.
Adrian: “There are ways people can tune their ECUs in different directions, but the MoTeC on the right hand is a very capable ECU.”
Trev: Even if the ASBK software locks each sector?
Adrian: “Even with the current situation.”
Trev: Are you using sector by sector a lot here?
Adrian: “No.”
Trev: Just the same engine braking the whole lap, etc.? Is that the same for Phillip Island and Queensland?
Adrian: “Yes, we tried it a little bit last year but we just stuck to the basic and basic goals, just to try and keep things simple.”
Trev: I mean obviously it’s an endless rabbit hole that you can just disappear if you really want to spend countless hours and rotations trying and tweaking it, if you want to use industry based maps . But I guess we don’t really have enough time…?
Adrian: “That was the point, we had limited testing, limited follow-up, and we wanted to try and make every session count. And like I said, we tried to do things a little differently in queensland, but it didn’t work, so we went back to how we did it last year. ”
Trev: Are you confident you’re back to the way you were?
ONE: “YES.”
Trev: We’ll see you here again at race weekend, to see the results from what you’ve learned from today…
The third round of the 2022 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Motorcycle Championship will take place the weekend of April 23-24 at Wakefield Park, Goulburn, NSW.
