Australian buyers are waiting by Volkswagen The Tesla Model Y’s rival will have to hold out a little longer.
The ID.4 And ID.5 won’t come until 4th quarter 2024instead of in the second quarter (current) of the year as planned.
Orders for the pair will open in June or July – at which point prices will be set, the brand confirmed today.
Ralph Beckmann, general manager of Volkswagen passenger vehicle product marketing in Australia, told the media the focus was on getting the pricing right to avoid major price cuts post-launch.
“The key point here is to bring these vehicles to market at a strong and sustainable price point that we can maintain in the market,” Mr. Beckmann said.
“The last thing we want to do is set a price, and then two months later we have to react and reduce prices significantly as we have seen in a number of cases in the industry.
“It’s really important for us to protect the customers who are buying this product and their future residual value to make sure it’s not destroyed by price fluctuations.”
Volkswagen confirms it has more than 7000 registrations of interest for the ID.4 SUV, the dominant model Tesla Model Y in Australia.
A number of electric cars have dropped in price in Australia in the last month, which is certainly in Volkswagen’s calculations.
Peugeot kicked off the carnage by slashing the car’s price by $25,000 SUV E-2008but this was followed shortly by major cuts to North Star 2 And Nissan Leaf.
The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y suffered another price cut today, taking their original price to a new low.
What to expect from the Volkswagen ID.4
Volkswagen has locked down local specifications for the ID.4will be sold in rear-wheel drive professional and four-wheel drive GTX class.
Volkswagen earlier this year said the ID.4 – and it is ID.5 coupe siblings – will fall in the middle 60,000 USD And 90,000 USD.
Both Volkswagen ID.4 versions have an 82kWh battery pack (77kWh usable) with DC charging capabilities ranging from 135kW for the Pro to 175kW for the GTX.
The ID.4 Pro has a rear-mounted electric motor that generates 210kW And 545Nmwith an announced acceleration time from 0-100 km/h of 6.7 seconds.

The ID.4 GTX has a second motor driving the front axle, increasing its power output 250kW And 679Nm – good for a 100km/h sprint time of 5.4 seconds.
Volkswagen claims driving range of 540km for ID.4 Pro and 510km in the ID.4 GTX, both meet European WLTP testing standards.
As standard, Volkswagen ID.4 Pro is equipped with:
