Volvo teases a Tesla-like single-screen interface for the EX30 EV

The Volvo EX30 compact crossover EV will not only be smaller. It will also be greatly simplified in its interface, Volvo revealed on Wednesday.

Without a separate gauge cluster, the EX30, like the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, switches all displays to a single display. Above it, speed and charge level will be among the information sections near the top, while navigation, media and other controls will be below, with a “contextual bar” that helps the driver see the important item.

As if that doesn’t sound simple enough, the display will provide a “calm” view that strips out all but important information — and aids night driving, Volvo says. It does not mention additional display.

Like the brand’s other models, the display system is built around Google, but Volvo says it will be the first model to offer wireless Apple CarPlay.

It says fewer screens give it a more spacious feel, with a choice from four different interior themes, including one that uses recycled denim. Memory will include a sliding center console with a lower tunnel allowing space for smaller items. The rear driver has a sliding storage box.

One of the most notable features is the soundbar for the Harman Kardon sound system, which includes multiple speakers and occupies the entire width of the area under the windshield. Volvo says there’s no need for door speakers, which frees up space for more stuff.

The EX30 follows Volvo’s new nomenclature for SUVs, as started with the upcoming version SUV EX90 will be manufactured in the United States starting next year, considering a production delay. Volvo has said that the EX30 will have Lowest carbon footprint of any Volvo product to date—with an increase in recycled materials and renewable energy production contributing to a 25% reduction in life cycle carbon emissions compared to C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge EVs.

These models boast improved efficiency for 2024 thanks in part to a new Volvo-designed and built rear-engine system, accompanied by a new emphasis on rear-wheel drive and, in a version number, updated battery. It hasn’t revealed what’s completely powering the EX30 yet, but a report suggests that worldwide there will be two battery pack choices, including a 51 kwh LFP pack or a 69 kwh NMC pack.

Volvo has confirmed that the model will be fully revealed on June 7th going to the United Statesand will be available that same day for US reservations.
