Supersport race three
Wet, dry, wet, dry, wet, dry…. They were the conditions leading up to the third and final Australian Supersport match at Phillip Island this morning just before midday.
This leaves some very busy pit teams scrambling to get two different setups ready, which to be fair is stressful…
For those who only have one bike, such as young Cam Dunker, his team has to change the setting from wet to dry along with the tires every time the wind blows the weather vane to a drier or humid end. than of the scale. They are busy…
And many of the crew also had a lot of collision damage that had to be repaired during the night. In fact, the entire front row had fallen off race two days yesterday.
Tire selection was also a gamble with elsewhere the track was still quite wet, but clotheslines were starting to appear. Most of the runners up front appeared to be soaking wet, but a few people down the field were betting on ball tracks.
Harrison Voight led Tom Bramich and Olly Simpson into the first round, Simpson then ran wide in the Southern Lop, although this allowed Jack Farnsworth to pass third. Farnsworth was up there, overtaking Bramich and then catching up with Voight but then his tires squealed enough and he went down pretty hard, and somehow the rest of the course missed. his stuck bike, luckily…
Ty Lynch entered the fight for second place as the race progressed, edging past Simpson and Walker before trailing behind Passfield. At the end of that second round, even though Voight was leading by almost six seconds!
Passfield had a moment in turn four in round three, sending him falling behind Mitch Simpson to fifth, just ahead of Tarbon Walker. That trio has now begun to lose contact with third-placer Ty Lynch and second-placed Olly Simpson.
As the race reached midway, both Jack Passfield and Declan Carberry caught up and overtook Ty Lynch to push him down to fifth, Hayden Nelson then pushed Lynch back into sixth.
Olly Simpson caught up to Voight’s pace in the second half of the race but was unable to regain that five-second lead. However, Simpson eliminated the rest of the chasing pack, leaving them to fight each other for the final step on the podium.
John Lytras tried his best in the end to take the lead in that battle for third place, then trailing Hayden Nelson and Ty Lynch in the final round.
Voight fell back in the closing stages but still won over Olly Simpson by 3.5 seconds. Defending champion John Lytras scored well to take third place ahead of Hayden Nelson and Ty Lynch.
Fifth place goes to Lynch but thanks to his win yesterday, South Australia leaves Phillip Island with a championship lead, his 54 points surpassing Voight’s 51. Jack Passfield placed 47th to finish third in the championship by one point ahead of John Lytras.
