Ever since Elon Musk announced the $8 fee for a verified account, predictions have started to abound about how the company will go about doing that. The biggest worry most people express is how easy it will be to impersonate someone on a microblogging site. And that’s exactly what happened in this case.
One person has a verified Twitter account claiming to be Jesus Christ and people can’t stop laughing. However, some people even expressed dissatisfaction and delight with the current verification policy of the microblogging site.
Immediately after the paid verification feature launched, many fake accounts of celebrities such as former US President Donald Trump appeared on the application. Some verified accounts even impersonated the ‘Super Mario’ gaming character and Lakers player LeBron James.
Handling the matter, Elon Musk tweeted that any account that tries to impersonate someone else will be disabled unless they claim it’s a parody account.
The account claiming to be Jesus Christ responded to Musk’s tweet by announcing that it was a parody account.
Twitter on Thursday announced that it won’t label the accounts “Official” though it is still pursuing impersonation and deception.
A tweet from the ‘Twitter Support’ account read: “We’re not currently putting the ‘Official’ label on accounts but we are actively cracking down on impersonation and deception.”
