Players on the U.S. women’s national team have long cheered on their male counterparts. Thanks to the historic equal pay agreement signed earlier this year, they have a million other reasons: The two teams are splitting their World Cup winnings equally.
When the men’s team advance to Round 16, they also guarantee a payout of at least $13 million. An equal share of that money will go to the women’s team – a greater fortune than any prize the women’s team has won in their streak of success at the tournament.
Under collective bargaining agreement two national teams signed with US Soccer earlier this year, the federation will take 90% of the prize money paid by FIFA for the 2022 Men’s World Cup — and also for the Women’s World Cup. next year — and equally divided among the players of both teams.
“Winning the World Cup has long been seen as the biggest obstacle to true equality among the US National Teams,” according to the report. United States Women’s National Team Players Association.
The ground-breaking arrangement removes that obstacle, but it also highlights a remarkable statistic: By watching the men come forward, the women’s team will make more money than they do. awarded for winning the last two Women’s World Cups.
All in all, FIFA is discounting $440 million in prize money for 32 men’s teams at this year’s tournament.
