The 2024 US Open is heading for a thrilling weekend as Ludvig Aberg tops the leaderboard with five under and six golfers, including some other big names, within two strokes. Bryson DeChambeau, the 2020 US Open champion, was among a group of three golfers who lost by one stroke, along with Patrick Cantlay and Thomas Detry. Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau and Matthieu Pavon are two off the lead, while PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele remains within striking distance at 1 under.
Aberg is the +333 favorite in the 2024 US Open odds, followed by DeChambeau (4-1), McIlroy (9-2), Cantlay (9-1), Schauffele (12-1), Finau ( 14-1), Detry (16-1) and Hideki Matsuyama at 16-1. McClure’s model correctly predicted Scheffler would top the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and this season’s The Players Championship. Top US Open 2024 predictions
A big surprise the model was calling for at the 2024 US Open over the weekend: Cantlay, one of the top favorites, stumbled and finished outside the top 5. With Xander Schauffele winning the championship PGA Championship, Cantlay is currently one of the best golfers today even though he has not yet won a major victory. He is currently ranked 9th in the world and was once ranked 3rd.
He was just a hair off the lead, but that was largely due to a sizzling first-round 65. He was unable to replicate that form in the second round, shooting 71 and the model predicts that he will not keep up with some of the other big names at the top as it has found better values for use in US Open 2024 betting. Another surprise: Hideki Matsuyama, a 16-1 long shot, made a strong run to the title. He has a much better chance of winning than the odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.
With three career top-10 finishes at the US Open, Matsuyama is a regular contender in this tournament. He also has plenty of momentum going into the weekend after shooting a bogey-free 66 on Friday. Overall, he has finished T12 or better in 5 of his past 7 PGA events, including a win at the Genesis Invitational, so McClure’s model suggests him entering 2024 US Open betting on weekend.
