Upgraded Porsche Taycan cuts charging time in half at home

The Porsche Taycan has been ranked as one of the best performing electric cars you can buy. With an upgrade, it could also be one of the fastest charging EVs at home.

Porsche earlier this week announced that US Taycan models returning to the 2020 production year will be eligible for an extra cost upgrade that’s not normally offered for EVs: a new integrated charger with technology twice the capacity—19.2 kW—than the maximum US Taycans originally received.

With Taycan’s 93.4 kwh Plus Performance Battery, that means a full charge from 0-100% in just 5.3 hours; and with less than 79.2 kwh Performance Battery, a full charge takes only 4.8 hours.

But it’s not for everyone. To take advantage of the full capabilities enabled by the built-in charger, you’ll need to dedicate a 100-amp circuit to the task, plus you’ll need high-powered home hardware capable of delivering high levels of power. that ability—Porsche’s Connect a 19.2-kw wall chargerfor example.

It’s an upgrade that those with popular American 200-amp residential service might not make the space for — and it’s certainly not for those with older homes with lower amplifier service or people who have condominiums or apartments.

As Porsche pointed out, those who ordered the new Taycan were able to add a more powerful built-in charger to their build by adding the KB4 option—a $1,680 premium. It has been offered as a factory option on the Taycan since early 2022, for the 2022 models.

According to Porsche, the upgrade has another added benefit for owners of 2020 Taycan models: with the replacement of the wiring involved, it also allows Plug and Chargea feature that allows owners to pay for public charging by simply plugging in the car. Taycans from 2021 onwards are already compatible with this feature.

More and more urban 240 volt chargers are available with higher power delivery capabilities for use outside the home. For example, GM is installing its dealers 19.2-kw Level 2 charger in their community.

The built-in charger costs a bit more to add to existing vehicles. The set costs $1,850, but that’s a fraction of the cost. This rather important surgery on the car took about 12 hours of labor. That works out to about $250 per hour of labor, plus other overheads, and that translates to a total of about $5,000.

That doesn’t take into account the current $1,269 price tag of the Porsche Wall Charger Connect home appliance or its installation, which Porsche says must be done by a professional electrician. The total cost to get this combo for the fastest-charging Taycan can run up to around $7,000 or more—but then you’ll also have a home device that can charge other models with this rating, like such as Cadillac lyriq, GMC Hummer EVor clean airwith the fastest speed possible.

Is that worth it? As we know from various polls and studies, most electric vehicle owners charge at home 80% of the time or more. For busy types of executives, the convenience of leaving in the morning with a full charge, no matter how late you’re out at night, can provide a lot more peace of mind. lots of.
