UofL Equine Schultz graduate wins first race as coach
Former assistants to Hall of Fame coach Shug McGaughey are starting to make it a habit to record their first victories at Oaklawn Park. First, McGaughey’s son, Reeve, did so in March 2020, and January 8 in Oaklawn, Lindsay Schultz followed.
A product of the University of Louisville’s Equine Industry Program, Schultz earned his first win with his 10th career start when Ten Strike Racing’s Capture the glory won $10,000 claimant at the Arkansas track in race 2. 8-year-old kid Go, dad gelding, whom Schultz claimed for the same price Keeneland in October, led under Francisco Arrieta and won 3 1/4 lengths.

After graduating from Louisville in 2010, Schultz traveled the equine world through a two-year internship in Darley’s Flying Start management training program, working as a longtime assistant to trophy-winning trainer Breeders’ Tom Proctor and manager of the famous Glen Hill ranch in Florida. before joining McGaughey in the fall of 2020.
Earlier this year, Schultz decided to go out on her own and land in Oaklawn, where she has a herd of ponies, led by a team owned by Ten Strike Racing, headed by founding partners Marshall Gramm and Clay Arkansas native Sanders. Gramm and Sanders helped give bloodsucker agent Liz Crow her start in the industry, and are now supporting Schultz, a close friend of Crow. Crow is the track manager for Ten Strike Racing, and Schultz is her bridesmaid at her wedding and godmother to Crow’s young daughter, Ella.
“Marshall gave her the opportunity when she went out alone, to help them,” Schultz told the Oaklawn Park public last month. “Marshall always says, ‘Let me know when you’re thinking of going out alone.” He actually called me this summer and said, “Well, you’re going to do it? Won’t you? What’s going on?” I said, ‘If you can help me, let’s do it.’ “
When asked her biggest lesson learned about learning the ropes under the guidance of successful coaches like John Shirreffs on the Flying Start program, then Proctor and finally McGaughey, Schultz told Oaklawn : “Let’s keep it simple.”
“And trust your instincts,” added Schultz. “Tom will always say that to me.”
Schultz, who also walks for coach Nick Zito in the Hall of Fame at Racecourse Saratoga while in college, was one of five coaches based in Oaklawn with horses on the field for Ten Strike. Others are Eclipse 2020 winners, Brad Cox, Jason Barkley, Bentley Combs and Randy Matthews
Now, like them, she is among the winning coaches, much to the delight of her supporters.
Crow tweeted that the team from ELiTE Sales, which she headed with Bradley Weisbord, “cheated as if our lives depended on this win! Congratulations (Lindsey), great win with the horse! her first statement!”
“It was great to be a part of (Lindsey)’s first career win with Capture the Glory and even better when it came.
at (Oaklawn), “Ten Strike Racing also tweeted.” Congratulations on the first of many wins, Lindsay! “
