The final professional tournament of this thrilling 2023 golf season took place on Thursday with the Open Championship completing its 100th anniversary as it officially moved into the 151st game of the R&A’s famed tournament. Royal Liverpool hosted the event for the first time in nine years as Claret Jug returned to Hoylake, England, for the 13th time overall with a pitch already loaded ready for scrap for a chance to lift it on Sunday. The Northern Irishman recently played one of the best golf games of his career, and he was close to winning the Scottish Open last week, which could be seen as a prelude to his first major championship in nine years. McIlroy topped the charts the last time Royal Liverpool hosted the Open in 2014; His last major tournament (the PGA Championship) also took place that year, which was also the last time Rory won back-to-back tournaments for weeks.
However, the competition will be stiff for McIlroy. Scottie Scheffler looks to put the limit on a phenomenal stats season, Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm both aim to win their second respective major championship of the year, and Rickie Fowler hopes to put the same effort as he did last time at Royal Liverpool when he finished second behind Rory.
