There is one more cost to Net Zero:

The cost of the return trip to New York is on track to increase by £40 due to incoming net zero regulationsaccording to data from Virgin Atlantic.

The additional burden on travelers is expected to increase further if sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) costs are passed on directly. Calculations by Virgin Atlantic, a pioneer in using greener jet fuel, show that ticket prices will have to increase by 6%.

For a return flight to New York, the increase will be up to £40 at current prices, based on two one-way fares costing around £350 each.

SAF is a refined mixture of waste oil, animal fat and ethanol from corn. This fuel is considered the most realistic path towards reducing aviation’s net CO2 emissions before radically new technologies, such as hydrogen propulsion, become widespread in the next decade or so. further.

Airlines operating from the UK will be required to use at least 10% SAF to power their flights from 2030, but with the fuel now costing six times more than whether traditional jet aircraft, passengers face the risk of increased ticket prices.

Figures published by Flint Global show that by 2040, when UK regulations require a 22% SAF mix, ticket prices will be a third higher if costs are not addressed.

UK regulations are stricter than the EU’s requirement for a 6% SAF mix by the end of the decade, with the difference potentially giving continental airlines such as Lufthansa and Air France a competitive advantage over Virgin Atlantic and British Airways.

British Airways currently supplies 90% of its SAF overseas.

The UK’s aviation CO2 emissions account for 0.1% of world emissions.

And as with everything else, as the world in general becomes richer, more people will fly. Any attempt by the UK to save a few tonnes of carbon will fail.
