Toyota to build EV battery factory for Lexus cars



TOKYO – Japan Toyota Motor plans to build a battery plants for tram in southwestern Fukuoka Prefecture and supplies batteries to a luxury goods factory. Lexus Cars branded cars, the Nikkei business newspaper reported on Friday.

The world’s top-selling automaker will seek to make the island of Kyushu, home to Fukuoka city, a central part of its battery-electric vehicle supply chain and an export base to Asia, the newspaper said.

The company is aiming to sell 3.5 million electric vehicles a year by 2030, with nearly half of those produced by its BEV Factory unit. It sold 104,000 electric vehicles in 2023.

According to Nikkei, the amount Toyota will spend on the battery plant and the construction start date have not been finalized, but the newspaper did not say where they got this information.
