Toyota Teammate driver assistance system increases the price of Mirai fuel cell car to 72,195 USD
The 2022 Toyota Mirai is available now with Toyota’s Teammate driver assistance system, but only as a $5,170 option on the top-spec Limited.
Toyota confirmed Green car report that while Mirai 2022 has been available for months, the Teamwork option isn’t available until March.
Revealed last year, Toyota Teammate was billed as “partial hands-free system“designed to reduce fatigue – and offered in the Lexus LS as well. Its Advanced Drive function can control acceleration, braking and lane focus on certain restricted-access highways, but still requires the driver to keep an eye on the road, according to Toyota.
This means that the Toyota Teammate corresponds to a Level 2 on the SAE automation scale, placing it firmly in the realm of driver assistance rather than autonomous driving. However, this still gives Toyota a position comparable to General Motors’ Super Cruise and to come Ultra yacht system, as well as Ford’s Blue Cruise.
2022 Toyota Mirai with Toyota Teammate
The system is actually being offered as a 10-year subscription along with Toyota’s Safe Connect, Dynamic Navigation and Destination Assist data services. Selecting this option brings the price of a 2022 Toyota Mirai Limited to $72,195 with destination.
Toyota Teammate is not available on the base Mirai XLE, which starts at $50,525 with destination. The base prices for both versions are unchanged, but the increased destination charges mean the actual price will be slightly higher than the equivalent 2021 models.
Toyota thinks it can bypass the bonnet sensor with driver assistance systems — a configuration not shared with anyone but Tesla, and possibly Fisker. Other car manufacturers decided that lidar is very important, even for a system that has been considered Level 2 for now. Lidar, which is similar in principle to radar but uses light rather than radio waves, provides a different flow of sensor data along with radar and cameras, but also adds an additional cost to the vehicle.
