Toyota RAV4 deliveries surge to record high as backlog clears

The Toyota RAV4 became Australia’s best-selling car for the fourth time in its history last month, setting a new sales record for the model range.

In July, Toyota delivered 5,933 RAV4s to Australian buyers, putting it in the top spot. Ford Ranger And Toyota Hilux utes for top spot.

This is a new monthly sales record for the RAV4, surpassing the 5,857 SUVs delivered to customers in April this year – breaking the previous record of 4,825 units sold in August 2020.

Since mid-2020, production constraints have prevented Toyota from building enough RAV4s to meet orders, resulting in wait times of more than 24 months for top-end hybrid models amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the first seven months of 2024, Toyota delivered 31,338 RAV4s to Australians, putting the brand well on track for a record year.

The RAV4’s current annual sales record of 38,537 was set in 2020, with subsequent production constraints leading to a decline in sales in subsequent years.

A total of 35,751 RAV4s will be delivered in 2021, 34,845 in 2022 and 29,627 in 2023.

The latter figure represents a surprising decline amid a new record for the overall market, although the Toyota RAV4’s fortunes have reversed so far in 2024, with deliveries up 92.6% compared to the same seven months last year.

2024 is a really big year for the RAV4 and it looks like it will continue to grow even stronger.

In JuneToyota has announced the RAV4 – like all other models with hybrid powertrains as an alternative to petrol – will be hybrid-only in Australia, citing high demand for electric SUVs (over 95 per cent in some months).

Last monthToyota has celebrated selling more than 500,000 RAV4s in Australia since its launch in July 1994, coinciding with the car’s 30th anniversary on local roads.

While demand for SUVs remains, wait times have now dropped to four months — about 20 months less than at the peak two years ago.

However, we’ve yet to see the RAV4 hit 6,000 deliveries in a month, a milestone both the Ranger and HiLux have achieved multiple times.

There’s also a question mark over the Toyota RAV4, following the automaker’s announcement last week that the SUV had been added to its growing lineup. violation of certification inspection procedures.

While Toyota announced in June that it would temporarily suspend Yaris Cross The batch with similar certification issues, RAV4s are still moving through the production line and onto ships bound for Australia.
